SOLEDAD

Backstory 

Soledad is a twenty one year old single female born in the hillside of an active volcano. Her parents raised her with struggle and love, but sometimes even too much love. As she grows older, she gains distance from her parents – she learns from her own life a set of believes that differ from those of her parents. She stops praying, she learns to love, and to be a strong female. However, a big anxiety grows in her body that does not let her sleep - she is not accepted or even heard by her father. Her father is her biggest fear, she needs to talk to him, to solve their differences and to have empathy, but she does not know how to approach him. Instead she continually washes her hands. The fear she has held inside for such a long time has shaped her as a weak and voiceless creature. Her dream is to be a child again, to feel the warmth of her father’s acceptance as an independent woman, and the recognition of her own self.

Character Description

People would think that Soledad has everything under control but she actually struggles to keep everything safe.  Her relationship with her father is rotten, leaking and disappearing. She struggles to communicate her feelings, and instead she tries to fix everything that is going wrong in the house: she places buckets under the leaks, tries to fix the walls that keep falling apart and dries the water with newspapers. Her insecurity and inability to speak produces anxiety in her body. As soon as she fails to approach her dad, she washes her hands.  However, with time she realizes that is not only her who fails to speak: her father is also ignoring their tension; he would rather distract himself. Soledad realizes that no matter how hard she tries to save their home, her father will never listen to her. Therefore, she decides not only to let the house drawn but to contribute to the process. Now, when she goes to wash her hands, she leaves the tap open and waits until water finally destroy them both.

AGUSTO

Backstory

Soledad is everything that Agusto holds in his heart. He is afraid to lose her but he is even more afraid that she loses herself in the world. As an old wise man, he feels he has gained the knowledge to know what is best for his daughter’s wellbeing. However, he is too busy in his own world. He is tired of living, of fighting, of arguing, of cleaning. His dream is to avoid any preoccupation and concentrate on reading.

Character Description

Agusto looks old and tired but people keep thinking he is the wisest man in town. Therefore, he feels he has everything under control - he enjoys to read and to listen to music. He is aware that his daughter is struggling with him, but his confidence is stronger. He is assured that the way he sees the world is the way everyone should, and especially his daughter.  Therefore, he knows there is nothing to talk about. He is too old anyways, and one day his daughter will thank him. It is not only until the house is completely filled with water that he realizes that his daughter was desperately trying to express herself. But it is too late, and nothing will save their home anymore.
